A Long Overdue Update

Hey fam!

Long time no see, amirite?!? Things have been pretty too damn quiet in this corner of the web, and for that, I am sincerely sorry. BUT, I have a few good, if not great, excuses for the 5ish month hiatus that I’ve taken from work on The Foodways Project.

Where I’ve been…

I’ve been PREGNANT, bruh! That’s right, for the past 5 months I’ve been focusing on growing a human person in my bellygut. After a very early miscarriage last November, which shook me up quite a bit, I’ve been excited/anxious/overwhelmed to be holding on to a healthy, viable baby bao that’s due in the fall!

Where I’m at…

Nowadays, you can find me managing the Danny Woo Community Garden in Seattle’s Chinatown/International District! This garden (and our parent org, InterIm CDA) has stayed very close to my heart since I first interned there, back in 2010. It’s been a breath of fresh air to be out of academia and back in the community. Working directly with the Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) community for the first time has been exciting/anxiety-inducing/overwhelming as I face the insecurities and oppression that I’ve internalized all my life. Never in my work have I (1) worked exclusively with the AAPI community (2) had the space to acknowledge how oppression and injustice shapes AAPI identity. It’s been an incredibly challenging, and ultimately, nourishing space for me.

Where I’m going…

What lies ahead? parenthood, growth through my paid work & activism, and hopefully a revival of The Foodways Project! I can’t make any promises, given the weight and responsibility of each of those individual roles (let alone their combined forces), but I have so much love and gratitude for the journey and exploration that The Foodways Project has and continues to lead me through.

Thank you all for your patience, support, and sense of community! It’s been a year and some change since I first launched The Foodways Project and I’m so grateful for the love and energy that’s grown from this platform. Stay tuned for more!

Welcome back! I knew you were never too far away. I look forward to a steady diet of Foodways nutrition for the mind, body & spirit.
